Re: Marry Our Daughter
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 5:02 PMYea, this was recently profiled on a local radio show. There were people who called to say that 14 was too young. And there were people who called in to curse and threaten the PR guy who was the guest on the show.
His response was to basically tell them to go to their legislature and get the law changed that would prevent this from occurring.
Their response to continue to threaten him.
American are so f@#$ing lazy. They would rather curse, scream, rant, rave, become irate and irrational than to become politically responsible.
We are such a young species, an immature country and culture. I look forward to our maturity. -

Re: Marry Our Daughter
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 7:30 AMThis is only ONE of the many problems with our society. With this one, I really wouldn't know where to begin. Sure, chaning the laws would be a good start but education would be another. Of course religion has a lot to do with it and there is not much that can be done about a person's belief structure. Just look at polygamy. Not that I am against what goes on behind closed doors between consenting adults, BUT when it comes to a minor, that's a different story.
Personally, I am all for laws stating legal age for marriage should be 18-21 - for me, it is always the issue of coordinating that one with either the right to vote, the right to drink or the the minimum age for military service. Arranged marriages just seem odd to me - it make me think of dowries along the lines of livestock....."So how many goats an chickens do ya want fer yer daughter?"

Re: Marry Our Daughter
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 10:13 AMFunny thing is, that the Age of Consent varies so wildly not only from country to country, but from state to state. I looked some of this up when the whole Matty debacle was exploding and was shocked to see a few states that have the age of consent as low as 14. And other states have a sort of sliding scale on what a minro is depending on the age difference when marrying.
Weird. -

Re: Marry Our Daughter
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 8:31 AMI think Arkansas recently passed a law that allows children of any age to marry if their parents sign. So babies can be married to eachother. I think this was more of an accidental loophole than intnetiona, and they are working to get it amended, but once something is on the books it's kind of hard to get rid of. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Tue, September 18, 2007 - 8:18 PMConvince yourself that political change is hard. Convince yourself that change is near impossible. Defeat yourself in your mind. That's what I want. You will fail before you even try. And that's how I will succeed.
You, as the people, will be impotent. And we will control you. You've made it so much easier. And I thank you. -
